Winter hill walking in Scotland can provide some of the most memorable outings you will have in the UK mountains, still, cold blue sky days to some of the most challenging conditions you will find in the UK. This Winter Skills course will give you the core skills and awareness to enable you to travel in any winter mountain environment confidently and safely. All courses are based in and around Cairngorm Mountain, this gives quick and high access to a winter playground. Be Avalanche Aware will be a running theme through the course from planning - journeying - to making key decisions.

Core Skills Covered 

Be Avalanche Aware

  • Kit and pre course guidance 

  • Route planning, Weather and Avalanche awareness (BeAvalancheAware)

  • Kicking, Cutting, Slipping and Sliding

  • Movement skills including steep ground

  • Winter Navigation, Map, Compass & GPS

  • Appropriate use of kit, where and when

  • Journeying and decision making
